Make The Most Of Your Visit

Once in Dartmouth most people want to have a good look around and get to know the place a bit. Take care, once you do this most people fall in love with it and either keep coming back or end up moving here, so beware!

There are two fortifications at the mouth of the river Dart. The Kingswear side Castle is owned by The Landmark Trust and available for holiday lets (now there's a unique if out of the way place to stay). The Dartmouth side has a proper Castle (operated by English Heritage), there are 14th Century Earth-work fortifications, a beautiful small church (St. Petrox) and a proper smugglers cove all within about 30 minutes walk from town centre. There's a Tea shop as well serving bottled beers, wines, cake, ice-cream (something for all tastes).

If you don't fancy the walk, or don't fancy the walk back a ferry service (pay in the boat) operates to and from the Castle; leaving from The South Embankment. It is possible to drive to the Castle but the road is single track at some points and parking is quite limited.

There's a brilliant Steam Train service that runs from Paignton to Kingswear and this can be linked to a wonderful journey by catching the ferry back from Totnes down (or up) the River Dart. This is called a Round Robin trip, tickets can be booked from local company Riverlink

There are two National Trust properties close by, one you'll need the car for Coleton Fishacre (originally home to the D'Oyly Carte family (famous for productions of Gilbert and Sullivan's Operettas). Or without needing the car, take the river trip from Dartmouth to the world renowned author Agatha Christie's former home, Greenway House, which overlooks the River Dart opposite Dittisham.
