DID YOU KNOW THAT BY SUPPORTING THE DART MUSIC FESTIVAL YOU ARE ALSO HELPING LOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE TO LEARN INSTRUMENTS AND EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF MUSIC?
The Dart Music Festival Foundation was established in 2011 and is a registered charity. As Trustees, Pam Braakenburg, Di Lyon and Hilary Day work with both individuals and local schools to help support the young people of Dartmouth and surrounding areas in their study of music. Students of guitar, piano, recorder, drums and, most recently, harp have benefited from the ongoing success of the Dart Music Festival.
Individual young students are able to apply to the Foundation for financial assistance with lessons, instruments or anything that helps to progress their musical interest.
Parents, teachers or individuals wishing to apply can do so through the Dart Music Festival website or by contacting [email protected]. The simple application form is the first step before meeting with us for an informal chat. We love meeting the young musicians and to hear how we might be able to help.
As Trustees of the Foundation we regularly visit local primary schools, and have been able to help with providing some interesting instruments including Glockenspiels and Taiko drums. The children have enjoyed both playing the instruments, and learning about different cultures and their music.
Stoke Fleming Primary School applied for funding to go towards repairs to the school drum kit. This simple request enabled the school to continue their music programme, and restart drumming lessons.
Dartmouth pre-school benefitted from a selection of musical instruments for the young children to play including a keyboard, wooden xylophone and a rhythm chest. There was much excitement when we visited the preschool, and the children were eager to show us their skills.
St John’s Baptist Church primary school was provided with 20 weeks of music instruction, in conjunction with Babcock Partners in Education. It was a hugely successful project and the photo below shows some lovely smiling faces!
Hopefully this is the start of the children’s interest in music and some of them will be seen at one of Dart Music Festival music venues in the future!
So, from all involved with The Dart Music Festival Foundation a big thank you for continuing to support The Dart Music Festival.
Pam, Di and Hilary
